Upstate Beer Dinner -- Rightsized

Well, the people have spoken. Seems that not many of you -- except for some "upstaters," a couple locals, and one truly devoted pair from Montreal -- wanted to pay $80 for the Upstate Beer Game Dinner at the Grey Lodge. We don't have enough tickets sold to do the event. Rather than scratch the event, though, Scoats and I decided to downsize it (or "rightsize it", as the current corporate cant goes) to a pay-as-you-go event featuring the four beers promised (I'm heading upstate to pick them up today) and buffalo burgers. If we're lucky, maybe the kitchen can still make those apple fritters...

If you want to try these beers, never before seen in Philly, we'll still have them. And it all starts at 5:00 this Sunday night.

  1. There shall be fritters. We already have apples for the brie sandwich.

  2. The organization I work for hosts a high-end dinner gala each year as a fundraiser, and it has been spectacularly successful over a 16 year stint. Even here, "upstate," we got the least positive response years ago when game was the feature. Don't feel bad, it seems that game is appreciated only by a devoted few and shunned by the rest. Combine that with an $80 ticket (ours was $150 back then) and the response could be predictable.

Great uncharted beer and buffalo burgers? Go get 'em! Good luck with all the "downstate" beer week festivities!

Or maybe how they used to be. Grey Lodge's food and menu has gotten a lot better I must admit.

  5. Lew could one bake a pie or perhaps a cobbler with that Boldy? Are there any vanilla notes in the beer?

  6. "There shall be fritters."

God, I never realized what lovely words those are. The Cinnamon Boldy was delivered a little over an hour ago.

Sam, you could be right. And...the folks who do come are going to be pretty happy with that Elk Creek IPA, eh?

Daron, I hope to be up in the area within the next 5 weeks or so; that sounds like winner.

  9. "Anonymous,"

You might want to consider hiring someone to write your comments for you; cuz what you're writing makes no sense. You're obviously trying to make some connection to Origlio buying wholesalers and suddenly becoming a major player in specialty/craft beer in the area, and linking me to them. But...that's no secret, I'm quite open about it, and I was saying good things about Blue Moon for quite a while before I did any work for Origlio: it's still one of the better beers made by an American macrobrewer. I have no idea what you're talking about with the "stenchy" comment. Here's my advice to you: step out from behind the "Anonymous" chicken-flag, say who you are, outright, and stop trying to be cute and coy and mysterious: it just looks silly.

  11. Chicken...
I'd come by tonight, but I honestly have no idea who you are or where you are or what this fine beer I have no time for is. There are a LOT of fine beers I've never mentioned here: I write for a living, and the blog is just something I do to promote my writing and appearances...much like you apparently sell beer for a living. Well, cool: we all do something. But like a restaurant reviewer sometimes has a negative impact on a restaurant's business, I'm just calling things as I see -- and taste -- them. I'm not here to support anyone's business -- except, as I said, my own, which is writing about beer and whiskey, and selling that to various outlets. I'm not here to run down anyone's business, either, but when there's something I don't care for, I'm going to say so. If I don't, I'm not doing my job.

So, who and where are you? Can't buy your beer if I don't know who you are.

  12. Maybe they sell BMC or the like and are too afraid to admit it, lol.
