I just learned (from a friend at a PR agency, to be scrupulously fair) that Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale is going to be pouring at the Democratic National Convention tonight. Philly is one of six cities (or maybe 8: I found that number in a Boston bit) participating in "A Taste Of America's Cities," sponsored by Democratic mayors. The man who tapped the "kind-of" first keg at Philly Beer Week's kick-off event gave the nod to sending soft pretzels, cheesesteaks, and Yards Philly Pale as our taste. Leaving out the whole shouting match over which beer he picked (any Philly craft beer is good for all Philly craft beer), I'm just frickin' tickled. This is beer, from America's Best Beer-Drinking City.
Can we make Michael Nutter mayor for life? Can suburbanites vote for him?
Lew, agreed this is good for all Philly area. But c'mon dude, Mayor for life? Next thing you know after 20 years you'll have a blog on abolishing Nutters reign.

Last I heard, John Hickenlooper was kicking butt in his approval ratings as Denver's mayor, too. Beer and the mayor's office: who knew?
ReplyDelete"For life" is always dangerous. But thus far, I'm happy to have Nutter in the mayor's office. And definitely not just because he supports local beer.
ReplyDeleteI got a buck that says that the way the beer was called "Philly Pale Ale" had a big part in why it was chosen. Nutter isn't a big beer drinker--he gets that it's a big thing, and I think he respects craft beer as a big part of the city culture, but he isn't a geek himself--and so the straightforwardness of Philly PA was perfect for him.

ReplyDeleteI was not really serious about "mayor for life." There are more important things about what he's doing than beer -- much more important, to the point that I couldn't begin to list them. And I couldn't be happier that the mayor is not a beer geek. That would be weird.

ReplyDeleteI'm just happy we have a good mayor and a great beer scene. I live in NY now, and the local brewing scene, while growing, just pales by comparison.
I just biked by there the other day. They (finally) have a sign up on the building. Hopefully brewing is soon to follow.

ReplyDeletemayor for life could be created in a honorary form, such as "the beer mayor", something to the effect of those honorary degree's given out by fancy university's. send Nutter around the country promoting Philly Beer Week. i'm sure we could use some tax payer dollars for that.
ReplyDeleteI like this Beer Mayor idea. Almost as cool as Mayor Mcheese or the Duke of Bourbon. He would need an appropriate sash to round out the ensemble.
