New Samuel Adams voting challenge

The new Samuel Adams Beer Lovers Choice contest beers are out there, where two proposed beers are sent out to be taste-tested across the country. I got mine yesterday, and they're in the fridge right now: American Rye Ale, and a Belgian-style IPA. After last year's voting propelled Noble Pils into the spring seasonal slot, I promise to never underestimate the American beer geek's palate again; that beer's brilliant. So bring it on; vote early, vote often!

I heard there was a big backlash against the Noble Pils. My reaction to that was that people must not like decent pilsners.

Really? First I've heard about that. Was that a BA thing, or did you hear that elsewhere?

I wasn't a fan of Noble Pils: http://ksmonthly.blogspot.com/2010/04/beer-month-day-3-noble-pils.html

I loved seeing the Noble Pils on tap as often as I did...

I had it on tap and loved it. I bought a case, and it wasn't as good. It had a really green plant-like smell to it, I presume from the hops. It tasted like someone had left a green tea teabag floating in it.

American Rye Ale and Belgian-style IPA seems a tad trendy, but are still good choices. I read a bunch of reviews that trashed the Noble Pils; I actually think it's one of SA best brews.

Too many beer nerds out there hold their noses to high against anything with "pilsner" in the name, probably in pendulum like reaction to it being the macro brew of choice.

I liked the noble pils.

Not sure we need *another* belgian ipa (whatever that is) so i would go for the rye this time around.

Well at least its not Blackberry Wit (2008 winner). I thought the noble Pils was a very good beer, and maybe not as good as say a Penn Pils or a Victory Prima Pils, was a good representation of the style, when found on tap. (Never had it in bottles.)

I think the rye MIGHT be interesting, though I fear what additives might come along with it. Belgian IPA as a style I have have understood, even when made by someone like Iron Hill. IPA made with belgian yeast strain? High IBU and spice qualities of Wit or Saison? Wish they had tried something more balanced like a farmhouse or Saison..

I'll have a glass of iced tea please.

I had the Noble pils on draft once and it was superb, with a huge fresh hop aroma and taste, Hallertau or maybe Tettnang I think.

I wish it was more available whether in draft or bottled form.

I thought that Noble Pils was good, but not as good as Sunshine Pils or Stoudt's. But it was more available when out.

Tried both the Rye and IPA last night at the game. Thought both were above average, but I have had better. I voted for the IPA, my wife the Rye.

They're not replacing the Noble Pils are they?! I loved that stuff!

Noble Pils is one of the best pilsners out there. Great choice on the last one.

Can't speak for the bottles, but Noble Pils on tap is excellent. I actually stayed away from it for a while because for some reason I thought it was an imperial Pilsner, but a buddy recommended it and I'm glad he did. I'll also second Marc's endorsement of Stoudt's Pils (had the privilege of trying it while in Philly a month ago and stuck with it for the entire evening). Fresh Pilsner is a wonderful thing.

Kind of off topic, but related to Sam Adams... Has anyone noticed a drastic taste difference in Summer Ale this year, both in bottles and on tap? Maybe it's just me, but it's not as good as previous years.

that was a very good beer, unfortunately some bars i had been to downtown decided to throw the sam "summer ale" on in its place and still call it the noble pils.
