Take a deep breath...

Whoever did this? Thank you. This was something that was needed. Because I suspect Tyl Eulenspiegl was a craft brewer, and his contributions were being overlooked.

Craft brewing has always been about fun, too. This brings that back.

Okay, second place I've seen this posted this morning -- wasn't gonna watch it, should I?

I understand the need for craft brewing being fun, but I don't think that fun needs to come from making fun as if good beer isn't worth the trouble (again, big disclaimer -- haven't watched. yet).

H'okay -- watched it. Have to agree with Todd Alstrom, I want my 4:23 back.

I am a craft brewer, or I am a home brewer?

Don't see it that way, Steven, but...that's kind of the point. Because I didn't see it the way "I Am A Craft Brewer" presented it, either. Overblown. Overstated. Overdone.

But still, it's okay. Because craft brewing is the classic "big tent." Inclusive. And that goes in opinions about the phenomenon, too.

I understand your interpretation Lew, and I'm a huge fan of parody, but parody needs to be intelligent -- this just seemed to be a bunch of people throwing out bad clichés.

Again, my opinion, as should be obvious.

lighten up Francis

It's funny, yes. But I always thought the original one had an element of irony in it.

Lew Bryson said...

Gary...are you throwing a double curve here? I figure any irony in that first one was unintentional.

Gary Gillman said...

No Lew I meant it would have been intentional. The way some of the people spoke, it was as if there was a glint in their eye... Maybe I read it wrong.

Al, don't call me Francis -- I'll...

Besides, it's not about comedy. Really, it's not.

I, as a craft brewer, appreciate the sarcasm here. Way too many people these days forgetting that beer is, above all else, just beer, and that's why we love it. Frankly I couldn't even get all of the way through the original. This helps bring us back down to ground level, where human beings live. Bad clichés? I'm not so sure what's cliché here, but whatever there might be - I think that's the whole point of this video... us against the big guys, yeah that hasn't been beaten to death... they're just making fun of that.

beer aficionados provide a nearly endless amount of parody material. The fact that several here are analyzing this piece as a matter of debate is proof positive that life imitates art.

BPotts said...

Ha, my sentiments exactly, Al!

A tad more (OK, a lot more) judgmental than I'd have preferred. Corn is nobody's (and I quote) "?+#@$%&*+@>+&" enemy, and if it is, you need to recalibrate.

Yeah, craft beer is great, I spend a lot of my beer dollar on it, and it has brought local brewing back from the brink, but does that make Straub-Yuengling-Genesee the enemy? Not in my book.

I'd have preferred a different, higher ground approach.

Lew Bryson said...

Sam...this is a parody making fun of a craft brewing video that actually did say those things.
Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev5OZS75qaY

Geez, I must have been raised too close to the industry, because I still don't feel the corn love here, and corn ain't an easy grain to brew with. Just ask Calagione about that corn chewing fixation he has. Otherwise, I'm all on board with this.

Do I need to lighten up??

Lew Bryson said...

Nah. Just have a beer.

If Todd Alstrom doesn't think it's funny, then it's definitely hitting close to home. ;-) On a side note, did anyone else notice that Michael J. Nelson from Mystery Science Theater 3000 is in this? Awesome.

Totally saw Nelson! I am a long-time MST3K fan, but maybe not as much as I think. I didn't know Nelson was a craft beer guy.

Keep circulating the tapes--er, recipes..

i know i'm late to the party, just watched this. i don't get all the ruffled feathers.... taking the piss out of the "i am a craft brewer" vid/manifesto while still waving the craft flag, albeit more snarkily. what's the old saying? criticism reveals more about the critic than the subject?
