The Frost is on the Pumpkin...

I woke up to the first frost of the season here in southeastern Pennsylvania, and it was a heavy one. Perfect time to put up this link to my winter beer story for Massachusetts Beverage Business magazine. It's tough sometimes to come up with a new story on something you've been writing about for 10 years; I dug into my archives to pull some quotes from early stories, including one from my very first story for MassBevBiz, back in 1998, from Jeff Close, former sales head for Catamount.

"With refrigeration and advances in microbiology, any beer can now be made at any time of the year. We don't need caves to keep beer cold as it ferments, we can hit boil times on the nose every batch, and stainless steel and caustic cleansers keep wild yeasts and bacteria well away from the beer.

There's something telling and sad about today's beer between those lines. Maybe I'm a traditionalist or sentimentalist, but I like the idea of beer that isn't quite perfect all the time. Thank goodness for brew-pubs I guess!

Lew -- I saw Blue Moon's Winter Ale on the shelves yesterday, any opinion? They're very mixed at BeerAdvocate.

I started to wonder if the recipe might be reminiscent of the old Coors Winterfest -- possibly the best beer they ever made, even if it was only good between 1985 and 1989 (+/-).

Haven't had the Blue Moon Winter yet. I'm still waiting for the full release of the excellent Blue Moon Chardonnay beer I had last fall at GABF. Sounds yucky, but it was delish.
