The Real Mystery about Memphis Taproom...

Memphis Taproom is doing a uniquely challenging event for know-it-all geeks this weekend. The Mystery Beer Weekend will feature 33 different beers (3 each in 11 different styles), and folks will be challenged to identify the beers they're drinking. There are prizes for those who correctly identify the most beers. It all starts at 5 PM this Friday, August 29, and goes to Sunday afternoon at 4.

A new kind of event, so far as I know, but I would expect nothing less from the man who invented The Royal Stumble (picture at right is the Stumble, the kind of action which will not take place at Memphis!). I'm really bummed that I won't make this -- I'll be in upstate NY with the wife's family (all three brothers and families, and my marvelous CO2 tap, and the bikes). I dunno how this sidesteps the law about clearly marked taphandles, but I don't care, either; truly, I don't care at all. I just wish I could join the fun.

I've been thinking about "beer events" a lot lately, and talking to some other folks about them. This kind of thing, and the Stumble, and the recent Battle of the Brewery Bands at Stoudt's (where I judged, and had the fantastically fun time you see to the right), are great: new ideas, new ways for people to have fun with beer, get together over more kinds of beer, and think about their beer without getting stupidly wrapped up in it. I'd like to see more possibilities for talking over beers without having to yell, though, and the Mystery Beer Weekend looks like just that kind of opportunity. I trust Brendan to keep it light, keep it from getting geeked out -- because the man's got a talent for piercing geekiness.

So... enjoy yourselves, and drink my share. And Sandy Mitchell, if you don't come to Philly for this and put your money where your big "I taste blind at Max's" mouth is, I call you "weenie."

Speaking of the Battle of the Brewery Bands, any chance you'll share your version of the evening?

Poor Brendan. Gets clobbered on Sansom, and is going to have to spend in the inaugural MBW more or less on the sidelines.

The fiance is leaving work on Friday early. We'll be at the Taproom as they tap all those blank kegs.

Hah? What happened to Spanky?

He was in an accident, not sure if he was in a car, or bike or walking, but he broke his collarbone I believe. Poor guy, he got pretty banged up. Someone stated this on beeradvocate's forum.

According to the crew at the Taproom, he was hit by a car, while on his bike, after leaving Tria one night, at the corner of 19th and Samson. Broken collarbone, staples in his head, and so on.

Not kidding, not making this up, I just finally checked this blog and found the challenge: according to my computer's clock, half an hour after it ended! Sorry, but I had other irons in the fire here in Crabtown and the Eastern Shore; check my blog later for updates.

And an aside to my "I drink blind at Max's" shtick: But I have to freely admit, I have a list of the 72 drafts in front of me when I do it, and usually color alone will eliminate half or more of the list (if it's porter-colored, you can eliminate the pilsners, ambers, etc.). Did the folks at Memphis have any list to choose from? You have hope if, for example, someone puts a red ale in front of you and you know it's something from the region; if it could be anything at Max's, RFD, Brickskeller, or Foodery, well.......

And no, I'm hardly perfect or even great. Mahaffey's in Canton once had an eight-big-beer taste-off; I recall I went 0-for-8 out of that line-up.
