A-B Beach Bum Blonde Ale

(This is the original post that turned into a discussion over the definition of craft beer...so I gutted that one, brought the beer review over here, and shifted the discussion and comments to the new post.)

Another Anheuser-Busch seasonal specialty is out: Beach Bum Blonde Ale. It's a repeat from last year, but this is tasting better to me than the ones I tasted in Idaho last summer; more hop, more overall flavor, but still crisp, light, and drinkable: just what you'd want from a summer beer. The ones in Idaho may have suffered from the bigger beer company they were keeping, I dunno: I'm talking to an A-B brewer tomorrow, if I remember, I'll ask him. (I forgot; I'll try to follow up.)

Had some over the weekend (as noted in the Father's Day post), and it was fairly popular with folks. Noticeable hop character, a quick release on the finish, but a lingering bitterness. Good stuff. I think the name and the graphics are silly, but I'm 48 and ornery, so take that with a grain of salt.

Dunno, guys...check in the phone book for your local A-B wholesaler (they're the ones with the big A-B eagle in their Yellow Pages entry, probably), and ask them. If they don't have it, ask them why not.

I had draft version last night and, not to be contrarian, must say my impression barely came anywhere near your's.

Went into it with an open mind. Nose and initial taste was of very sweet pomegranate, maybe apricot, and syrupy too. But, basically, sweet and syrupy fruit-like welcome.

Then in the middle, I believe I got some wheat, followed by apple and bigger orange flavor.

Then, the biggest disappointment was in the finish, which was dirty and nasty, and wouldn't let go of me.

Overall, kind of sweet, muddy, and dirty. Maybe I should try the bottle version to give it a fair shake.

Does sound like a completely different beer. How are that bar's other tap beers?

I was at Half-Time Beverage (Poughkeepsie)[1800 beers] the other day and asked about this stuff. The manager told me that yes, he had heard of it but the local A-B distributor was too small and that he didn't forsee them getting it, nor did he think that upstate NY was going to see it. His opinion was that it tasted like St. Joseph's aspirin for children.

I did pick up a growler of Weyerbacher Muse that I plan on cracking open tomorrow with dinner.

Apologies to the Gods of Hops for this post...

I FINALLY found this beer at my local (Catskill, NY) Price Chopper supermarket.

I must admit that i wasn't sure when i picked this stuff up...but hey now i do like it...its pretty damn good. Not sure what the guy from Half-Time was saying (nothing against him at all), but I don't tast the St. Joes aspirin that he referred to at all. I do taste citrus, and a bit of bitterness but nothing overpowering or nasty, it really is a good summer beer and I will drink it.

All in all a good drinkable beer.

Glad you found it, Bill; even more glad that you liked it, after all that trouble. It's nothing much, but it's a pleasant beer. Summer beer. Pretty much covers it.

Just picked up a 24 case for 13.99 .... cant beat that. I guess it is because it is near the "best when drank by" date...But 50 cents a beer, with a hardly stale taste=good to me.
