Comment Spam Explodes

I've had comment moderation on for years, thanks to a couple real jerkwads who insisted on polluting the blog. But I've never had much problem with "blogspam," comments full of advertising and links to crapsites, and I just rejected them. I got maybe one every other week.

Yesterday, all of a sudden, I got twelve, and it's continuing today. So I'm considering adding CAPTCHA tech to the comment field; that thing where you have to type in the 'word' you see in a window before your comment will post. I don't want to do this -- it's a pain in your neck -- but neither do I want to have my time sucked up by rejecting a bunch of "Miley Cyrus NUD!" spam, you know?

So...will having to do that one extra step be a real pain in all your butts? Or is it no big deal? Let me know, and I'll factor that in before I decide. And who knows, this may just be temporary.

Not sure if blogger has something similar, but I installed a plugin called WP-SpamFree on a wordpress blog and it virtually eliminated comment spam. It never even hits the approval queue.

They're so ubiquitous now that I don't think it's a big deal. A good one will have an audio option for sight-impaired visitors. I like ReCAPTCHA because it has the added benefit of helping fix the OCR scanning of old books.

I see you're on the Blogger platform. I'm not hip on all that's available for Blogger (I use WordPress) but there are other methods to help combat spam besides CAPTCHA. Akismet is one and it catches a lot of it. Bad Behavior is another that recognizes the signatures and activities of spam bots. If either of those can be used on Blogger (or if there is a similar product that will) you may not need the CAPTCHA.

DEAR SIR/MADAM I am Dr.Martins Ergo. Chairman of the Tender Committee of the Nigerian National Brewery Corporation (NNBC). My Committee is principally concerned with payment of all contracts awarded from 1998 to date, in order of priority as regard capital projects of the NNBC. The information we gathered
from the Foreign Office of the Nigeria Chambers of Commerce and Industries is so positive as to convince us that you would provide us with solution to a money transfer deal valued at Thirty One Million United States Dollars

No big deal. Do it. I am a comment reader and hate when they are full of spam.

A pain but worth it if it keeps out the crap and only "slightly" delays valid posts. Anyone who has a problem with it needs to "Relax"

Yes the CAPTCHA is annoying, but I wont blame you if you put it in.

capatchka or whatever the hell it's called is hardly an inconvenience, i'd go right ahead and institute it if i were you.

We use Captcha at work and it has been very helpful weeding out SPAM and we've not gotten any complaints. Fight fire with fire, I say.

Frankly, I would be quite pleased if comment spams would indeed explode, or, better yet, if spammers themselves would spontaneously combust.

I am sure it is just me, but I am awful at entering those codes. I almost never get them right on the first try.

Not a big deal, and well worth the time investment on your (and our) parts. It's a pain to read all the blogs and stories on sports websites like ESPN or Fox, which have half of their comments filled with ads for Viagra knock-offs

Lew do it. The spam problem is horrible. We can certainly put up with it to keep your blog a good place for discussion.

I do not care for the typing the word displayed boxes, but it is something that is necessary. I would say more on the subject, but I am on my way to JFK airport. I have received 3 emails this morning from a diplomat that is stuck there and wants to give me $150,000,000.00!

Thanks, folks. What's weird...I have Blogger set up to forward all comments to my Gmail account for moderation, and none of the comments from this post are coming through. Because they're "spam?" WTF?

Consider yourself 'lucky' now--getting hit by those donut spam comments is a sign of success as you've reached sufficient exposure levels to attract the suckerfish.

Captcha's don't bug me so much--it's the cost of proving that you really exist and aren't just another digital flicker.

Lew-
I don't know the specifics of CAPTCHA, but I've found that some of those programs are easy to deal with and some (like Yahoo's) is a pain in the butt and will take me multiple tries to type the correct thing.

Yeah it's a sad but true part of the online world now. I'll keep reading and posting even if I have to figure out was that a 5 or an S I was supposed to enter in the window :-)

I have several friends with Blogger sites who require captcha for comments (hell, I think mine does too) and I find Blogger's captcha software to be quite easy to read. I doubt it will get anybody too upset.
