Ash Wednesday Thoughts

Maybe it's just the fast talking but...
  • Do any of you other Catholics start thinking, "Man, my forehead's itchy..." and reach up and scratch most of their ashes off before they realize what they're doing?
  • Does how much you're "allowed" to eat vary between dioceses?
  • If the diocese across the river lets me have half a sammich for lunch, can I go there?
  • Beer doesn't count, right?
  • Where can I get more doublebock real quick?
  • I actually feel smarter without eating. If I put one of those Breathe-Right strips on my nose and start getting more oxygen, too, maybe I can solve this mortgage problem.
  • Do dog biscuits count?
  • I really love fish. I do. I love it like a brother. A brother that I'm going to grill up and eat with fingerling potatoes and mixed greens tonight.

My parish, St ann's in Lawrenceville, actually holds a fish fry tonight, importing a fish and chips operation from the the Thistle tavern in Carney, NJ, where fish n chips is its own religion. Beer battered fish about half as big as your forearm, absolutely delicious. Not so delicious when you start scratching your forehead ashes onto it, but there ya go.

My wife, a non-Catholic, has many times questioned why giving up beer for lent was not one of my options. Can't do it, but instead of giving up "Liquid Bread" I just gave up baked bread which is also a favorite of mine. My dogs would bust me if I got into their stuff.

I'm no pope, but I think the true day of fasting means one full meal and basically enough to keep you from passing out the rest of the time.

Awful Catholic that I am, I completely forgot and am still preparing to devour the ham sandwich I brought to the office.

Yeah, I'm running on an egg and about half a cup of brown rice right now, I'll have the full meal tonight.
But...give up beer for Lent? Not happening. I don't understand people who do that.

Trying to stretch my piece of cheese now. And looking forward to enjoying a non-session beer with my meal tonight.

Sorry, Lew. I'll need that "big" beer today. :-)

No need to apologize, I'm going d-bock myself!

I did it in 2002.
But with Philly Beer Week in the midst of it...not happening.

In our diocese one year, St. Patrick's Day fell on a Friday during lent. Our Bishop gave us a dispensation that year, so we were allowed to "party" on a Friday during lent, and have our corned beef and cabbage. Did I mention that our Bishop was Irish?

It was just pointed out to me for the fourth time this morning that I have something on my forehead! And it itches! Or something! Regarding the fast, it certainly doesn't include beer, but no meat, and only one full meal, and if you eat two or three meals the others can't be as large as the full meal. So I just make sure I eat a REALLY LARGE dinner! And wash it down with dopple Bock!

Joanie, I remember turning 50 on Good Friday! No dispensation granted.

Lapsed Catholic here. I gave up giving up stuff for lent for lent. My co-workers, many of whom are from South Philly, use lent as a verb. "I'm lenting on chocolate."

I only know one observant Christian (I don't count her husband as he's just doing it for an easy life). As that bloke who used to be fat but now isn't and ran for President told you, we're godless heathens in Europe. I worship Zeus.

Lew Bryson said...

So...this Zeus worship. Strenuous? Take much dedication? Or just putting up a few lightning rods around the house?

"Beer doesn't count, right?"

Fasting is what Paulaner Salvator is _for_. :)

With regards,
Ted

Exactly, Ted, exactly!

I'm giving up Beer Advocate for lent. I think my blood pressure will drop 20 points by not having to suffer those hop-centric reviews.

Best Lenten promise I've heard yet!
