I'm off today for the World Beer Festival in Durham, NC. The folks at All About Beer magazine invited me down to the festival, to check things out and to give a seminar on Dark Beers. I've been checking out the beer list and getting interested; this is going to be a great chance to try some new breweries.
It's also a chance to try some new 'que. I'm going with my brother-in-law Carl Childs, who is about as much a barbeque hound as I am a beer hound. Carl's got the best smoke pits en route and in Durham mapped and plotted, and we is gonna be eatin' some pig. Should enable me to get back in the swing of The Session, our monthly beer blog-a-rama (I've missed the last two months, regrettably), which is Beer and Food this month, put on by Beer Haiku Daily. Beautiful.
Will you be able to post the Dark Beer seminar (or at least the details) here or at the LB site?
You like the mustard based carolina cue?? I thought you more of a traditionalist. :)

Bill, I am a small-c catholic (as well as a Big-C Catholic) when it comes to 'que. I do like pig. Period. Well, no: I like brisket, too. And ribs, beef and pork. And chicken. Like that mutton they do in Kentucky. B'sides, as the Fanatic said, it's about the meat and the smoke: the sauce is secondary. But awfully good. Umm-hmmm. catholic.
Lew, I hope you have a good time down here in the South. The beer culture is getting better and better all the time. Be sure to try some North Carolina breweries to see whats happening in these parts. I am driving from Asheville (3 1/2 hours away) for the fest. Hopefully I'll get a chance to say hi.
Oh, and about barbecue. A good site to check out is http://www.ncbbqsociety.com. They have a barbecue trail that highlights places that still use wood (unfortunately many places have switched to gas). I plan on swinging by Allen & Sons in Chapel Hill, a short drive from the Festival. It is supposed to be some of the best in the state.

bill mc...save the mustard for Sling Blade! North Carolina sauce comes in two forms: eastern style (pepper and vinegar) and western/Lexington (a bit of tomato sweetness). Mustard-based pork barbecue is a South Carolina tradition.

After this event, I figure on giving the seminar other places. Might blather about dark beer some here, but I won't be putting up my talking points. Not trying to be a pain, just trying to make a living. I realize I'm giving away stuff here all the time -- such as it is -- but this is promotion...for things like seminars, and articles.
Smoked fish? All over that. But is that really barbecue?

sean wilson... heck I like any kind of que too, just that the mustard is not on top of my list...what you describe is right up my alley...yum!
Its like what i used to get in eastern Tennessee, when i lived there. everyone there descsribed the mustard based as "carolina style" , no north or south.

If I've got a public event, I'll post about it. Like I said, the blog is all about self-promotion. Heh. I remember getting an indignant e-mail a few years ago about my website, guy was all pissed off about how my website was all about me. Well, yeah! I'm a business, man, I just happen to be passionate about it and be in a fun business. But I'll be as plain as Uncle Jack was last week about it: this is my job, and the website, the books, and the blog are all about spreading my reputation and making money.
Nothing wrong with having some fun while we're doing that, though.
