You know how I feel about pumpkin beers...

I've made my feelings about pumpkin beers pretty damned clear:  "pumpkin beers mostly suck." But I also admitted that I liked some of them, and there are a couple I absolutely adore, like the amazing ShawneeCraft Pumpkin Saison. It's getting creative and crazy and genius..ish with pumpkin beers that I like. Which is why I'm telling you about this event at Hawthornes Beer Cafe that I'm gonna miss because I'll be in Pittsburgh signing books.
Join us for our 1st Annual Pumpkin Beer Dinner! 7-9 PM Sunday November 14th. We will be serving 4 savory courses paired beautifully with 4 different pumpkin beers. Southern Tier Pumking, Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin, River Horse Hipp-O-Lantern and Dogfish Head Punkin'.

Amuse Bouche: Pumpkin Seed Brittle w/ cranberry and mint
1st: Pan seared Pumpkin Gnocchi, shitake mushrooms, mascarpone pancetta sage butter, pumpkin seed pesto
2nd: Coconut Curry Pumpkin Bisque w/autumn pear creme fraiche
3rd: Oven Roasted Pork Tenderloin stuffed w/spinach and sharp cheddar served over sweet bourbon walnut mash and blackberry gastrique
4th: Pumpkin Mousse w/toffee gingersnap cookie crumble
Reservations are required for this event. $50 per person plus tax and gratuity.

Just got an e-mail not a minute after I posted this: Devil's Den is doing a pumpkin event Thursday, Oct. 28th, with 7 draft gourd brews and 6 bottled pumpkineers, and a squash-based menu: Pumpkin Soup topped with toasted pumpkin seeds, Pumpkin Ravioli with a sage brown butter, Stuffed Pork Chop with Pumpkin Stuffing, and Pumpkin Mousse. Holy gastropumpkinpub!

And not a ONE of them serving nachos, the PERFECT pairing with punkin brews! PERFECT!

You should stop on your way out to the 'Burgh and grab yourself a Pumpkin Ale at Selins Grove if it's still on. Impossible not to like that one!

Might I also slip in a plug for Danville's Old Forge Brewing? To quote Damien: "Don't forget about our Pumpkinfest starting Tuesday 10/26 and continuing thru 10/31. We'll have pumpkin pretzels, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin mashed potatoes and pumpkin desserts...and of course, our Smashin' Pumpkin Ale! I used about 40 pounds of pumpkins in this 10 barrel batch, along with some brown sugar and spices, and it finishes up around 5.4% ABV."

Won't be at either one: already scheduled -- I have an a capella group rehearsal tomorrow, and I'll be in the 'Burgh doing events during Hawthornes dinner.

I'm by no means a pumpkin lover, but I always get a mixed case from my local distributor (shhh) for the season. You've included my two favorites from the set: Dogfish Head and Weyerbacher. (Really, is there anything that Weyerbacher DOESN'T do well?) There's a third in the bunch I enjoyed... I want to say Buffalo Bill's?

I think it should be illegal to make a pumpkin beer without pumpkin.

I agree with you Lew, but as you said, a few are really good. I find Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin the best with a winy taste that does not (in most years) overstate the spices. Like if you combined the best ESB and best vintage cider and best claret wine, that's what it's like.

I think what does in a lot of pumpkin beers is, too heavy on the spice.
